Design Engineer II

About the Role

Colony Display is seeking an experienced Design Engineer II to lead the design and engineering of custom retail fixtures and display solutions from concept through production. This role is responsible for developing production-ready engineering packages that balance design, functionality, manufacturability, quality, and cost while supporting some of the industry’s most recognized retail brands.

The ideal candidate brings a strong mechanical engineering background, extensive knowledge of retail fixture manufacturing, and the ability to manage complex custom projects while collaborating across engineering, production, estimating, and customer-facing teams.


Responsibilities

  • Create detailed fixture designs and engineering drawings for both internal teams and customer review.
  • Manage complex custom display and fixture projects from concept through production.
  • Develop engineering documentation that supports efficient manufacturing and high-quality production.
  • Create assembly drawings, installation drawings, and production documentation.
  • Develop and maintain accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs) for wood, metal, and mixed-material products.
  • Manage engineering revisions and maintain version control for drawings and Bills of Materials.
  • Identify and implement value engineering opportunities that improve quality while reducing manufacturing costs.
  • Participate in prototype assembly, testing, and design validation to improve manufacturability.
  • Engineer custom display solutions based on conceptual renderings, customer requirements, and project specifications.
  • Reverse engineer existing products and identify opportunities for design improvements and cost reductions.
  • Collaborate with Account Executives, Designers, Estimators, Production, Prototype, Purchasing, and manufacturing partners throughout each project.
  • Develop testing methods, troubleshoot mechanical or structural issues, and validate product performance.
  • Support manufacturing operations to ensure products are built according to engineering specifications and quality standards.
  • Perform additional engineering duties as assigned while maintaining compliance with company policies and procedures.
  • Maintain regular onsite attendance and actively support cross-functional project teams.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in point-of-purchase (POP) display, permanent fixture manufacturing, or a related industry.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, materials, and manufacturing processes.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD software, with Autodesk Inventor preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to create accurate engineering drawings for both domestic and overseas manufacturing partners.
  • Knowledge of wood, metal, and plastic fabrication processes, including sheet metal, tubing, wire forming, vacuum forming, injection molding, and welding.
  • Ability to research and evaluate new materials and manufacturing methods that improve efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Familiarity with measuring tools such as tape measures and calipers, along with GD&T principles.
  • Experience integrating electronics into display systems, including LED lighting, LCD displays, and sound components, is a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational abilities with experience managing multiple projects and deadlines.
