Design Engineer I

About the Role

Colony Display is seeking a motivated Design Engineer I to support the design, engineering, and development of custom retail fixtures and display solutions from concept through production. This role offers an excellent opportunity for an early-career engineer to gain hands-on experience while working alongside experienced engineering, prototype, and manufacturing teams.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, mechanically inclined, and eager to solve problems in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. You’ll play an important role in developing engineering documentation, supporting prototype builds, and helping ensure every project is designed for quality, manufacturability, and cost efficiency.


Responsibilities

  • Create and revise engineering drawings, assembly drawings, installation drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs) for custom retail displays and fixtures.
  • Support the design and engineering process from initial concept through final production.
  • Process Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) while maintaining revision control for engineering drawings and Bills of Materials.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Estimating, Production, Prototype, Purchasing, and vendor teams to ensure designs are manufacturable and production-ready.
  • Participate in prototype assembly, product testing, troubleshooting, and value engineering initiatives to improve product quality and reduce manufacturing costs.
  • Maintain organized engineering documentation and provide ongoing support throughout the manufacturing process.
  • Assist with additional engineering and product development tasks as assigned.
  • Maintain regular onsite attendance and actively support cross-functional project teams.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in Drafting, Engineering, or a related technical field preferred.
  • 0–3 years of experience in manufacturing, product design, fixture engineering, or a related field.
  • Basic understanding of engineering principles, manufacturing processes, and material selection.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD software, with Autodesk Inventor preferred.
  • Ability to create and interpret engineering drawings and Bills of Materials.
  • Familiarity with wood, metal, and plastic manufacturing processes is preferred.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Experience using measuring tools such as tape measures and calipers is preferred.
